I sat on the bed and toyed with the TV remote. “Should I step out?” I said, cracking the door an inch. “Stay,” he whispered, “I have much to say.” Silence followed. His upturned palms were offered to the drab ceiling. Tedium bore down. “You’re not talking,” I said. The chief shook his head, “I am conversing with a higher power.” “Does God ever answer you?” Juvenile question. But, you know, why not? “Of course, the chief said. “All Gods answer. You just have to know their language.” - -
