- - “It’s endless,” I shouted. “Then so be it,” the chief threw back over his shoulder, “ You can stop whenever you wish. In this you have the power. How does that make you feel?” I considered his words for another fifty steps. Well, steps is a relative term. This was a drunken ramble on a rolling treadmill. Gravity was laughing at me, sipping tea and rolling its eyes at my pathetic attempts at gaining momentum. “I get it, if I stop, I die. Is that it? Is that all it ever is? Move and live; stop and die?” I fell and tried to wipe the grit from my eyes. Again, futile. Succeeded only in filling every fold of skin with moisture-sucking grains of gypsum. To think that people pay good money for this kind of rub down. I was buried knee-deep. Angry at the sand and the wind and the sun and, well, life. The chief stood over me. His shoulders blocked the wind and sun. I blinked my eyes clear in his shadow. “It’ll beat you every time,” he said. “What will?” He laughed and stepped aside and the elements ruled again. - -
